The Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar taking place Aug. 25 at noon will feature Mark Licht, extension cropping systems specialist at Iowa State University. Licht’s research focuses on corn and soybean cropping systems and management that includes integration of cover crops, no-till and strip-till practices.
In the webinar, “In the Field: A Conservation Case Study,” Licht will share the components, results, and educational versatility of an in-field case study developed in collaboration with the Iowa Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to demonstrate the benefits of conservation practices integrated with common Iowa farming methods. The case study is part of an ongoing effort to create and distribute tangible educational materials for use in agronomy curricula for high school and college programs, field days and other training opportunities for farmers and agronomists.
“Research has consistently shown in-field practices such as cover crops, no-till and strip-tillage contribute positively to supporting resilient production while building soil health and reducing nutrient losses,” said Licht. “Field- and farm-scale case studies such as the one I am discussing in the webinar help get relevant information into the hands of farmers. I hope this and other case studies illustrating the broad use of in-field conservation practices will resonate with farmers and encourage adoption of practices that are right for each farm and field.”
Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
