Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Yellow River Headwaters Water Quality Project, Trout Unlimited and Iowa’s Cold Water Conservancy, will host an oxbow and streambank restoration field day near Castalia on Wednesday, Nov. 4 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Tom and Jeni Melcher farm. The no-cost event is open to farmers and landowners and includes a complimentary meal.
The field day will feature hosts and Winneshiek County landowners Tom and Jeni Melcher sharing their experience with the oxbow and streambank restoration process along the Yellow River, the largest cold water trout stream in Iowa, including why they were motivated to begin the processes and challenges along the way. Additionally, a panel of local farmers with a range of conservation practice adoption will participate in a question-and-answer session covering grazing, no-till and cover crops. Area project coordinators will be on hand to discuss how area farmers and landowners can get involved and enroll in cost-share opportunities. Weather permitting, the field day will include a field tour of the oxbow and streambank restoration.
