Iowa Learning Farms, in partnership with the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, is hosting a free virtual field day on Thursday, December 4 at 1 p.m. CT.  Join us for a live discussion with Dr. Mike Castellano, William T. Frankenberger Professor of Soil Science at Iowa State University.

There is growing evidence that the amount of both corn and soybean residue affect the optimum nitrogen fertilizer rate to the following corn crop. Higher levels of residue lead to higher optimum nitrogen fertilizer rates. However, recommended nitrogen fertilizer rates do not consider the amount of residue from the previous crop. The virtual field day will highlight this innovative research project examining the ability for farmers to adjust optimum nitrogen fertilizer rates based on the amount of corn and soybean residue production in the previous year’s crop and improve water quality outcomes.

“The current solution for crop residue management is often intensive tillage in the fall or even in the spring. We believe an alternative to tillage to deal with crop residue management can be the partial residue harvest. So roughly harvesting about 60% of crop residue would take us back to about the residue produced in around 1975, but pairing residue harvest with no-tillage or cover crops would benefit soil health,” commented Dr. Castellano. “One of the particular things that we're interested in testing at this field is whether partial residue harvest improves water quality outcomes. How could partial harvest residue harvest improve water quality outcomes? That seems like it might be a little bit of a surprise.”

Tune into the field day live to learn more and participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
