Barbara Johnson

For Barbara and Stanley Johnson, caring for Iowa’s land and water is second nature. Growing up just a few miles apart in rural Page County, both have learned the importance of protecting Iowa’s fertile soil since childhood. Though they left Iowa for a short time after they married, the couple returned to the area where they had grown up. A respect for the land was key as they made decisions and grew both farm and family over the past several decades. Now retired, Barb and Stanley are passing their knowledge and legacy onto their children and grandchildren.

Typical of many Iowa farms, Stanley raised 300 acres of corn and soybeans while Barb raised pigs from farrow to finish. In addition to the more conventional farm income, the Johnson’s also raised Christmas trees for several years. Their love for trees and native habitat can further be seen through a place they call their “learning farm”. After purchasing this farm more than 30 years ago, the couple chose to put the land into native prairie and timber. The addition of a pond and cabin has provided their family with a natural getaway right in their backyard.

Both Barb and Stanley have been highly involved with water quality throughout their lives. Barb served as a Page County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner, as well as on state boards for soil and water quality, and even served on the National Association of Conservation Districts Water Resources Committee. Stanley has been a long-time member of Page County Pheasants Forever and was added to their Hall of Fame in 2013. Together, they work to lead by example and help others learn why they do what they do.

As Barbara and Stanley watch their children and grandchildren take part in their operation, the couple hopes that future generations truly understand the “why” behind the decisions they have made. As they continue to pass on knowledge to others, Barbara and Stanley hope to also pass on a legacy of respect and care for the environment around them.

Building a Culture of Conservation:

“We have the privilege of taking care of the land. I feel like it’s a privilege, and we respect it as that. It’s not just a job.”
