Clark Porter
Clark Porter manages his family’s farm, Porter Family Farms, in Iowa’s Grundy and Tama counties. Clark has been an educator, nonprofit administrator, and (recently) environmental specialist for the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Clark is involved in day-to-day management, finance, purchases, marketing, crop scouting, and agronomic decisions. Like his father before him, Clark hires custom operators and local farmers for field operations and for their technical expertise in crop production.
Since taking over full-time management of Porter Family Farms in 2011, Clark has adopted many conservation practices, including cover crops, 100% no-till, saturated buffers, nutrient management, and CRP filter strips. He is also partnering on a research project funded by the Iowa Nutrient Research Center exploring the possibility of saturated waterways.
Building a Culture of Conservation:
“As a landowner, it is possible to manage the land the way you want. You don’t have to know everything, but finding the right people to help you treat the land the way you want it to be is the first step.”
