September 8 Webinar: Stormwater Management Tactics and Results

September 1, 2021

The Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar taking place Sep. 8 at noon will feature William (Bill) F. Hunt, William Neal Reynolds professor and extension specialist, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, North Carolina State University. Hunt is an extension specialist, researcher, and academic focused on stormwater management and green infrastructure, with a special focus on applied engineering.

In the webinar, “The Evolution of Stormwater Management in North Carolina from the 1900s to the 2020s,” Hunt will explore the state’s journey of stormwater management utilizing examples of practices that drove changes in nutrient management and removal, pathogen sequestration, stream health, and water supply quality. He will also discuss incorporation of ecosystem services and flood resilience practices that have proven beneficial to the state’s overall water system, and hopes to help audience members learn more about what may work in their locales.

“Until the 1990s, stormwater management in North Carolina was focused on flow mitigation and was not uniformly addressed across the state,” said Hunt. “After major fish kills along the North Carolina coast were attributed in part to nutrients carried in urban stormwater, the state began a significant and long-term journey toward understanding and uniformly managing stormwater impacts. I am hopeful that Iowa's cities and towns can learn from the trials, errors, and successes of municipalities in North Carolina with respect to how to best manage stormwater runoff.”

Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
