Webinar: Lessons Learned from the North Carolina Stormwater Control Measure Inspection and Maintenance Certification Program

November 3, 2021

The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place Nov. 10 at noon CST will feature William (Bill) F. Hunt, William Neal Reynolds professor and extension specialist, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, North Carolina State University. Hunt is an extension specialist, researcher, and academic focused on stormwater management and green infrastructure, with a special focus on applied engineering. In the September 8 ILF webinar, Hunt provided a survey of stormwater and nutrient management approaches over time. In this session, he will be looking forward in time to implementing and maintaining stormwater control measures.

In the webinar, “The North Carolina Stormwater Control Measure Inspection and Maintenance Certification,” Hunt will focus on a certification program in North Carolina that has provided training to some 4000 professionals since 2006, with the goal of understanding maintenance and upkeep needs for stormwater control systems. He will highlight the community of professionals across the state working to extend the value of investments made in implementation of practices crucial to creating amenities, mitigating flooding and improving water quality.

“As with any investment, it doesn’t make fiscal or logical sense to design and build stormwater management infrastructure, only to abandon it,” said Hunt. “Upkeep is necessary to maximize the lifetime performance and value of these systems. Through the training and certifications provided, professionals are not only better prepared to maintain systems, but are also encouraged to address upkeep funding needs from the outset to ensure each project delivers and continues to deliver returns on the investment.”

Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
