Webinar: Using an Aquatic Drone to Sample Water Quality in Iowa’s Waterways

March 21, 2022

The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place March 30 at noon CDT will feature Peter S. Levi, Ph.D., associate director, Burke Center for Freshwater Innovation, Northland College, Ashland, Wisconsin. Levi is a freshwater ecologist who studies the cycles of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, and flows of energy in and through streams and lakes. His recent research has included assessment of factors driving the general poor water quality in Iowa’s creeks, streams and rivers.

In the webinar, “Discovering Variation in Water Quality Across an Otherwise Uniform Landscape,” Levi will share information and data gathered in a fine-scale study of water quality along Alleman Creek—a tributary to Fourmile Creek in Polk County, Iowa. The study of water quality per meter and minute, conducted in concert with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, utilized an aquatic drone to sample water quality in a section of the creek adjacent to crop fields along which saturated buffers had been installed. He will discuss the sampling process and results from 2021 work.

“Our 2021 data showed high variability of water quality for sampled parameters, and the team is continuing to focus on nitrate level measurements in 2022,” said Levi. “The collected data clearly indicates that practices such as saturated buffers do help improve the poor water quality in adjacent waterways. However, scaling these and other practices to deliver consistent results along the length of a given creek, stream or river is a challenge. As we continue to gather data, this project can provide essential information at a fine scale to help understand the benefits of specific practices and inform future implementation decisions.”

Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
