Alec Amundson

Getting their start in 2016, Alec and Rachel Amundson farm corn and soybeans, along with small grains, in rural Mitchell County. As part of Green Country Farms, the couple works alongside Rachel’s brother, Adam Norby, to farm and custom graze around 2,300 acres. As the they took over management of the farm, they also took over the conservation practices established by their predecessors beginning in the 1990s.

Green Country Farms utilizes a wide array of conservation practices to ensure they are protecting the land and water as they increase productivity. They work to reduce soil disturbance by practicing strip-tillage in heavier soils, and no-till on lighter ground. They’ve also inherited saturated buffers and woodchip bioreactors that work to reduce nitrogen loss from subsurface drainage.

Unlike many Iowa farms, Green Country Farms integrates cereal rye and oats into their crop rotation. While the rye is grown for cover crop seed, the oats are sold for human consumption. After harvesting small grains, a diverse cover crop mix is planted, which can be custom grazed by neighbor’s livestock. By taking multiple steps towards sustainability, Alec hopes to provide the same farming opportunities that he has to many generations to come.

Building a Culture of Conservation:

“I’m farming the land for the next generation. I need to take care of this [land] because it’s not mine”
