Jeff Pleggenkuhle
Farming has played a role in Jeff Pleggenkuhle’s life since childhood. Although things have changed in his family’s Fayette County operation over the years, his goals to benefit the land remain. Currently, Jeff and his sons grow corn and soybeans, alongside their custom hog feeding operation.
After seeing erosion in some of his rolling land, Jeff knew changes needed to be made to reduce soil loss after harvest. These changes began with the integration of cover crops on the land. With around 500 acres of cover crops, Jeff has seen great benefits to his soils, especially on critical acres. In addition to cover crops, Jeff tries to minimize tillage on his land. Although conservation practices can pose challenges, Jeff focuses on the benefits they provide and continues to look towards expanding his cover crop acres.
With a long heritage of farming in rural Fayette County, Jeff believes in conserving the land, so it’s left as it was found and can be farmed for years to come.
Building a Culture of Conservation:
“Conservation is very important if we want to farm the land 200 years from now.”
