Nicole Vernon
Since purchasing her first 100 acres in 2016, Nicole Vernon has worked to make conservation a key part of her farming operation. The Vernon Farm had always focused on sustainability, with no-till being a major part of the operation for 35 years. As Nicole has grown her operation, she’s introduced cover crops to not only benefit soil health, but to offer an additional feed source for their cattle. Nicole is also experimenting with intercropping corn and soybeans, hoping to offer a more energy dense forage.
The variety of forage options had helped Nicole grow her cattle and hog operations, enabling her to offer meat directly to consumers. This cycle offers the potential to benefit local farmers, butchers, and consumers. What started as selling whole or partial animals, has transformed to Nicole being able to sell select cuts that customers desire.
Nicole’s experimental thinking has gone beyond the field with the installation of a corncob bioreactor, which is helping reduce nitrate leaving through their tile drainage. It’s through these many practices and Nicole’s innovative thinking that she is helping improve Iowa’s soil and water resources. By making these management decisions, she hopes to provide healthier land for future generations.
