Trent Thiele
Trent Thiele has been a farmer all his life. Growing up on the same farm his grandmother and father were raised on in rural Howard County, Trent has come to focus on making changes on his land to benefit the future. Along with around 1,100 acres of corn and soybeans, Trent also raises 30 stock cows, purchases 250 feeder cattle each year, and operates a custom pig nursery. To lessen his impact on the land, he utilizes cover crops on a majority of his row crop acres and utilizes no-till ahead of soybeans.
In addition to the more common conservation practices, Trent has experimented with relay intercropping. This practice offers the potential of three harvestable crops over two growing seasons. Though there have been learning curves, Trent continues to see potential in the practice and plans to continue his trials. One of the greatest benefits of the practice is being able to harvest cover crop seed for use in the fall.
Though farming has its hurdles, Trent continues to seek out new ways to not only benefit his operation, but to ensure he’s also benefitting the land. As he takes steps to adapt to new challenges, Trent hopes to provide healthy land and water resources for generations to come.
